Brimheim is on the move

Brimheim had an incredible 2024, following up her debut album with the critically acclaimed RATKING. We caught up with her for a quick chat about the past year—and what’s coming next.

Hi Brimheim! First off—who are you? Or maybe a better question: who is the person behind Brimheim, the artist?

Brimheim is sort of the shadow version of me – not in a negative sense, but in an archetypal one. She’s the place I go when I need to be more honest than I can always be in everyday life. The person behind her is Helena, a deeply sensitive and curious person who’s still learning how to be human. I’m fascinated by what’s uncomfortable, contradictory, and tender and I try to make music that holds space for those things.

2024 was quite the year for you! Nominations, awards… Did you expect any of it?

Honestly? No, I didn’t expect it – but I wasn’t surprised either. I had a lot of faith in RATKING and in the work I’ve been doing behind the scenes these past few years. I've been slowly growing into myself, and the art has followed that process – becoming more truthful, more me. So while the recognition in 2024 felt surreal at times, it didn’t feel like pure luck. It felt earned. If anything, this year has felt like a harvest – the result of patience, planning, and a lot of uncomfortable but necessary growth.

You also did your first EU/UK headline tour. Where did you play, and how did it go?

Yes! That tour was a real milestone for me. We played in Berlin, Rotterdam, Nijmegen, London, Paris, and Frankfurt – and later made our way to Oslo, Stockholm, and Göteborg. The Berlin show in particular was wild: sold out, packed to the brim, and charged with this electric, almost chaotic energy. I honestly didn’t know what to expect in terms of turnout, so it was a beautiful surprise to walk into rooms that felt full – not just physically, but emotionally. Each night felt like a conversation with strangers who somehow already knew me. And standing at the merch table afterward, meeting people who’d connected so deeply with the music – it was overwhelming in the best way. Exhausting, yes, but also affirming. Like, oh – this means something to people.”

And you even made it all the way to Seattle, right?

Yes, I made it all the way to Seattle. The whole trip felt like a warm hug - high vibrational, wholesome, and a surprising number of Brimheim fans in the wild. I got to attend DJ Kevin Cole’s “not-really-retirement” party, which was basically a mini festival packed with love, great music, and an amazing crowd.

We also visited the legendary Sub Pop headquarters, thanks to Megan Jasper, who gave us the grand tour. That place is just bursting with history and art that’s been so formative for me as a person. I was honestly so moved that I had a good long cry in a donut shop right after. It reminded me of my 14-year-old, Nirvana-obsessed self and why I started making music in the first place. That DIY spirit still drives me.

And getting a behind-the-scenes look at KEXP – especially during DJ Cheryl Waters’ show, with Kevin as our guide – was such a treat. Seattle really showed up for us. I left feeling inspired, recharged, and super grateful. I’ll be back for sure if Trump doesnt block my visa application.

It reminded me that my music can travel farther than I sometimes let myself imagine.

Anything else from 2024 that stands out to you?

My homecoming show at Store VEGA was a massive highlight. Just a few years ago, I was bartending there, dreaming of what it would feel like to stand on that legendary stage. In 2024, that dream came full circle — I walked onstage to a crowd of 1100 people. It was surreal, emotional, and also a moment of real arrival for me. I’d visualized it so many times, and when it finally happened, I felt very in tune, present and ready. I was nervous too of course but it didn’t really shake me. I was surrounded by an incredible team, my amazing band, and a room full of people who truly got the music. I’ll remember that night till I’m dead in the ground. It felt like proof that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.

It seems like you have a small but dedicated team supporting you. Can you tell us a bit about them?

Absolutely. I feel incredibly lucky – but building this team has been a process of trial and error over the past five years. It takes time to find the right people who not only believe in the vision but have the guts and skills to help realize it.

My manager Lorri is a powerhouse – strategic, empathetic, unafraid of hard conversations – we bounce off each other in a great way.

I’m signed to Tambourhinoceros, an indie label based in Copenhagen. We only started working together properly at the start of the RATKING rollout, and they took it on with such drive, despite how tight the timelines were. It was a crash course in collaboration, but they showed so much integrity and trust in me creatively. The campaign came together beautifully, and I’m really proud of what we’ve built. We even broke even within the year, which is no small feat in today’s industry.

My Danish live agency, Smash!Bang!Pow!, have been key players in building Brimheim at home. They understand the local landscape deeply, but they’re also cosmopolitan in outlook — always thinking big, never provincial. And then there’s Paul McGivern at Pitch & Smith, who represents me across the EU/UK. He came on early and has been instrumental in starting to break those markets. He’s no-nonsense, experienced, and most importantly, genuinely believes in the music which makes all the difference.

It’s a small but mighty team – everyone’s in it for the right reasons.

What’s next for Brimheim? And can you share anything about upcoming releases?

I’m deep into writing my third album. It’s more vulnerable, more stripped back in some ways, but still weird and cinematic where it needs to be. I’ve also started painting again, writing short prose and poetry. All of it feeds into the music. The new songs are quieter but sharper, I think. Like a blade wrapped in silk.

Thanks, Brimheim! See you soon!
