Tunghoyrt are taking their first steps onto the international music scene
First of all, for those who haven't come across Tunghoyrt yet, how would you describe the band and your music?
We are four 20-year-old guys who come from the Faroe Islands, who love making heavy songs and blending them with psychedelic, dynamic, and dreamy atmospheres. Our sound is constantly evolving, but we are slowly finding our own identity. Lyrically, we mostly write about our lives, experiences, and things we can relate to as young men. We don't really like limiting ourselves to one particular genre, and that's part of what makes writing music together so exciting.
You previously earned a spot at the SPOT Festival in Denmark through the Sement competition in the Faroe Islands. What was that experience like, and what did you take away from performing at an international showcase festival?
We were very happy when we won the award, and it mattered a lot to us. The experience was every musician's dream... going outside of your home country to play music for an international crowd was always an ambition of ours. We were greeted with a green room, free beers, and much more. It was awesome!
Because we were so new at the time, the experience humbled us badly; however, it still gave us a better understanding of what it's like playing outside of the Faroe Islands, and it definitely motivated us to keep pushing our music further.
You're now heading to Iceland Airwaves. What are you most looking forward to, and what are your expectations for the festival?
We're so excited to return to Iceland for a second time and give the people a show they won't forget! We've prepared an array of new songs that we can't wait to perform for a new audience. Our expectations are high, as Iceland Airwaves is such an important festival, and we believe that this will be a great opportunity to meet new people and introduce our music to a larger, more diverse audience.
Coming from a small music scene like the Faroe Islands, what do you see as the biggest opportunities and challenges when trying to reach an international audience?
Coming from the Faroe Islands definitely has its advantages and disadvantages. We have a small but very supportive music scene where a lot of musicians know each other and help each other out. One of the biggest challenges is definitely the geographical isolation. Travelling abroad with all our equipment is expensive, and there are only so many people you can reach by playing at home. On the other hand, coming from such a small and unique place gives us an identity that makes us stand out internationally. We believe that music can connect with people regardless of where they come from or what language they speak, and that's something we want to prove with Tunghoyrt
How important is playing live to Tunghoyrt, and what can audiences expect from one of your shows?
Playing live is really important to us. We put a lot of emphasis on the audience's experience, and above all, we want people to enjoy themselves. Our live shows are full of energy, dynamics, jokes, and gimmicks. Being on stage is a way for us to release all the stress of everyday life. It's an addicting rush and a great way to blow off steam. We often joke that the reason we're so active on stage is because of all the pent-up energy from not playing enough gigs. All in all, the audiences can expect one hell of a ride at our shows. A quiet song, a beautiful song, then an ugly song, followed by an even uglier one!
Finally, what's next for Tunghoyrt? Any new music, upcoming shows or bigger ambitions you'd like to share?
Our next big project is the album we're currently working on. New sounds, better songwriting, and a renewed fire to write music. The boys in the band have been busy with "life" stuff recently, but we've slowly found our way back to making music and pursuing new opportunities. Hungrier than ever, we're working towards something completely fresh, bringing together everything we've learned as musicians over the past year. Our next big ambition is to go on tour, but we're still figuring out how to make that happen!
Thanks, Tunghoyrt, and good luck in Reykjavik!
