Joe & The Shitboys – From a Small Bar in the Faroe Islands to Touring with Iggy Pop

Joe & The Shitboys were definitely on the road again last year, making crowds dance, mosh, and shout across a good handful of countries. And, they also released an album. Once again, on a 10” vinyl.
We caught up with them to hear more about 2024, and what’s coming next for the bisexual, Faroese vegans.

Hi Joe!
First off—who are you? Or maybe a better question: who is the person behind Joe, from Joe & The Shitboys?

Hi FMX! My name is Fríði Djurhuus. I’m a 30 year old bisexual vegan, and I grew up in a small village on the Faroe Islands. I work at the local record label and store, Tutl, promote shows, DJ, and once a week I hang out with the coolest 15 year old girl (shout out to Witchy Witchery, the weirdest and most abrasive shit you’ll hear today.)

And what about the rest of the guys?

Ziggy Shit studies politics and is awaiting his first kid. Ollie Shit has a bachelor’s degree in economics, but cleans septic tanks and rooms with me. Johnny Shit is an asshole.

2024 was quite a good year for you, wasn’t it? Any highlights?

The most obvious highlight for us, was opening for the coolest band in the world (after Bon Jovi), The Hives, in Italy of all places. We also finally dropped our third album, the first one that I have been satisfied with. It’s a relief that the whole world can finally hear the words: “Eat ass you fucking cowards” with just the touch of a finger. What can’t Elon Musk do.

You also did some headline tours. Where did you play, and how did it go?

We played 19 shows in 8 different countries (we’re counting Scotland). It went like shit. No, all of the shows went well, even if attendance would swing from 10 to 300. It just sucks that Denmark still has the craziest Shitheads. I’m rooting against them, and still nobody else comes close.

Anything else from 2024 that stands out to you?

The biggest experience any of us have had so far, was when we opened for The Hives in Italy. We’ve all been super fans since we were kids, and actually talking to them and seeing how cool, calm and Faroese they were, was a feeling like no other.

The Great Escape is coming up in a few weeks. Any expectations or hopes? You’ve played the festival a few times now, right?

This will be the third year, but we’ve played a lot of shows the previous times. We never hope for anything specific, and just try to make connections with people. We’ve always given every show the same level of commitment, no matter if it’s 8 people or 3.500 people (the actual lowest and highest attendance rates), and The Great Escape is of course no exception. The aforementioned The Hives concert came about from the show we played for you last year, and, the time we played before that, we got booked for a Canada tour. Neither of those could have ever been foreseen.

And then, not long after The Great Escape, a tour with Iggy Pop!?

Yes! We’re doing three shows with Iggy, and adding some headlining shows in between. Although we appreciate the support The Hives have given us, we’re a bit over their level now. For real, it’s not something any of us would have ever expected, and it’s wild that the Iggy shows are happening less than a year after The Hives.

What’s next for Joe & The Shitboys after that? Can you share anything about upcoming releases?

Nah, we’ve just started doing some geometry. We’re trying to figure out how many segments of 7” can be contained on a surface that is 12”.

Thanks, Joe! Best of luck with everything ahead!
